What's TALL up to?
Phew! These last few months have been an exciting blur full of new projects, creative clients, and exciting adventures. We wanted to get all of our loyal followers (insert laughing emoji here) caught up on the TALLstudio Architecture news, and fill you in on all the project deets (short for details, in case you didn't know). We have a few new commercial projects we are working on, an exciting concrete house, and a couple of projects that are currently in construction, or close to it, including our very own TALL house! Without further ado, let's dive right in.
Unlisted Speakeasy - Jackson, MS
Located on Capitol St in Jackson behind Sugar Ray's Sweet Shop, the vibe of this speakeasy is going to be contemporary glam meets 20s Prohibition (sans gangsters, plus legal whiskey). We're working with a great team on this project. The clients are a pair of young, hip entrepreneurs who want to improve the downtown Jackson area (lots of cool things happening here if you haven't been to Jackson lately). We're also teaming up with Mary Sanders Ferriss Interior Design. Mary Sanders brings such a refreshing aesthetic, and she has extensive knowledge of the ins and outs of the restaurant industry. We can't wait to have cocktails out on the back patio. Don't worry, you can join us.
OS Works Coworking Space - Ocean Springs, MS
A few months ago, we had a client come to us with the idea of creating a coworking space in Ocean Springs. If you aren't familiar with the concept of coworking, have no fear, we will give a brief explanation. Coworking is: "the use of an office or other working environment by people who are self-employed or working for different employers, typically so as to share equipment, ideas, and knowledge." Since we've got the definition out of the way, you can see that we were clearly very excited by this idea. The client wanted a hip, cutting edge space in order to foster creativity and serve as not only a working environment but also a community space. The design is utilizing an existing building with major transformations happening on the interior and a few large moves happening on the exterior (currently the building is a 13,000 sq ft metal building). The interior will be comprised of three large studio spaces, 12 offices, flexible desk space, breakout areas, and a plush lounge that will be ideal for hosting after hours events and lectures. The coast is full of entrepreneurs, and this will be the ideal place to work, generate new ideas, and socialize.
Concrete House - Ocean Springs, MS
Whenever we have a client use the words "uber modern" when discussing their ideal residence, we go weak in the knees. This phrase was used by a new client of ours to describe a home for herself, her husband, and their kids. After she told us the aesthetic goal, she went on to mention that they were interested in a concrete home (weak knees, weak arms, weak everything). We knew we were the firm for the job. The house will be comprised of concrete structural members-- i.e. walls, roofs, and flooring. This type of construction is ideal for this area, with the constant threat of hurricanes, and the need for elevated homes in certain areas. We are still in the early phases of design for this project, but we can tell you that the house will have an inhabitable garden roof, cantilevered porches and living areas, and a detached guest house/office tower. With a keen grasp on environmentally friendly concepts and technology, we will be utilizing the stack effect, cross ventilation, and prepping this house for future solar panels.
Chaney Residence - Ocean Springs, MS
Renovations are always a challenge, but we feel that they push us out of our comfort zone and force us to get very creative. This project was no exception, and now that it has moved into construction, we have to say that all of those extra brain waves were worth it. Located in one of our favorite Ocean Springs neighborhoods, Cherokee Glen, this structure hadn't been touched since Hurricane Katrina, and our clients had a vision of downsizing from their current house and making this small structure a modern, cozy home. The house will have views of Fort Bayou, as well as a small canal, offering up perfect morning and afternoon vistas. The footprint of the structure was 650 sq ft, and we knew we wanted to stay pretty tight within this area. We ended up adding a porch on the East side of the house and pushing the West side of the house out 5' to allow for a larger living area. One of the owners works from home a great deal so we created a secluded office on what is technically the third floor giving her breathtaking views so that "going to work" is a little easier every day. This project should be wrapped up by the end of the year, and we can't wait to show the interiors.
Truxillo Addition - Ocean Springs, MS
A cool place to retreat is always a perk in the south, and that's exactly what the Truxillos were after. Having recently bought a house in Ocean Springs, they soon realized that they were lacking the exterior space they needed to entertain, relax, and play with their kids (hint, hint: this is where TALL comes in). We surveyed the property, a tight lot in the downtown area, and set about creating a space that offered different zones in which to facilitate a multitude of activities. The material palette was streamlined, think concrete, steel, and painted wood, and will allow for minimal maintenance with maximum cool factor. Construction is under way, and we can't wait to have a cocktail in the finished space!
Darin Master plan - Ocean Springs, MS
We like to describe a master plan as a "road map" for a site. Said road map takes into account both present and future phases of construction, site development, and allows the site to be worked on over time with an overall end goal in mind. With that being said, this master plan plans for an initial phase that will consist of a pier, elevated entertaining area, camping platform, oyster shell gabion wall, trails, and an observation deck, with the future phase being a home for the clients in the next few years. We wanted to intervene as little as possible on the site, as it is situated at the tip of a peninsula, and every view is breathtaking. The material palette will blend with the surrounding landscape and offer maximum enjoyment opportunities.
Thanks for catching up with us. We'll see you around!
