Q & A
Have you ever had a question for an architect? If the answer is YES!, then this is the post for you. We took the questions we are most frequently asked, and we tried to answer them as candidly as possible. If you see something missing from the list, comment below!
Q: Do I need an architect for my project?
A: Well, that depends. If you are wanting to build a single-family residence under 5,000 square feet and three stories or less, the answer is "No, you don't have to", but if you are building a residence over 5,000 square feet, or any commercial property, then it is a resounding "YES!" If you are wanting to build a residence under 5,000 square feet (and let's face it, most of us are) we strongly recommend hiring an architect (of course we do!). An architect will help you get the most tailored product for your lifestyle, show you where you can save money and where it is smart to put your money, and we are just all around fun to work with!
Q: When should I involve an architect?
A. From the very beginning. This doesn't mean that we have to be involved in every single phase of the project, it just means that we help you lay out a solid course of action and avert any unnecessary disasters.
Q: How much do you charge?
A. Ooh, tough question. Doesn't everyone hate talking about money? There are three ways that architects typically charge: by the hour, by the square foot, or a percentage of the total construction cost. We have used each of these methods for different projects, and sometimes we need to combine them to get the best product and price for our client. The typical way we quote for residential is to give a 3 tier pricing option, i.e. bronze, silver, gold. We can be a little involved or a lot involved based on your budget. For commercial work we will charge a percentage of the total construction budget (it varies based on the project), and we often offer consultation for an hourly fee.
Q: Do you have a particular design "style"?
A. Here at TALLstudio we REALLY hate to pigeon-hole ourselves with a particular style, but if you look at our design aesthetic and the type of architecture we are drawn to, it's easy to say "contemporary". This doesn't mean we can't or won't take on projects that aren't contemporary, it just means that this is our passion, what we know the most about, and where we feel we excel.
Q: How long does it take to design a project?
A. This depends on a multitude of factors (none of these are simple answers, of course!) but for a residential project you can expect the design phase to take anywhere from 3-6 months, and for commercial 6-12 months. There are ways to shorten (and lengthen) the process.
Q: How often will we meet?
A. We love to chat. Can't you tell? We typically meet at the beginning and end of each phase of a project, and these often overlap.
Q: Do you guys design "green" buildings?
A. The term "green" has so many connotations, but yes, yes we do. We design each building in a sustainable manner, starting with the siting on the land, the way the building will collect and reflect the light, and the materials that we select to comprise the building. In the world we live in today it's getting much easier to find recycled building materials, energy efficient (and affordable) appliances, and locally sourced products, fabricators, and laborers. In order to be a responsible designer, all of these things need to remain top of mind.
Q: Do you travel for projects?
A. Travel, us? YES! Our dream is to have projects around the world, and right now we have projects around the Southeast.
Well guys, there you have it. We welcome suggestions, and we love a good chat, so stop by!
