Hey, you out there, are you ready for the next EXCITING design phase that we promised you way back here? Yes?? Well, the wait is over, and we are here to dive head first with you into DESIGN DEVELOPMENT! Sounds fancy, doesn't it? To give you the low down on ol' DD (that's a fun acronym you can impress all of your friends with) this is the part of the project where we start to delve into the details, unearth the material palette, and get into the nuts and bolts of how exactly the building will be assembled. During this part of the process it is fairly common to think that the architects actually stop DESIGNING, and just start producing, however, in our case, this couldn't be further from the truth. You see, DD is where a project can become truly spectacular. We are able to start looking at every single nook and cranny in a building and discover just how magical these small moments can be. We figure out how to keep water out of the building, which is both a practical and artistic endeavor, how to bring small scale details to the building, how to draw the inhabitant in, how to bring light in in interesting ways, and so, so much more. While we are in this part of the design process, and let's be honest, all the time, we have our sketchbooks pretty much super glued to our hands. While we are driving in the car, sitting at a coffee shop, reading a book, something might spur an idea and we have to sketch it out immediately. Below we have included a few pages from our sketchbooks to show you just what we are talking about and to give you an idea of what the ramblings of an architecture firm may look like. After DD we are moving into Construction Documents (CD's as the cool kids call it), and this is by far the longest phase of design, sans actual build time, of course, so be on the look out, and until then let us keep you entertained with our hair brained, but always fun!, ideas.
